With Melbourne cup approaching, there is no doubt race courses will start to be occupied by beautifully dressed ladies.
There is not much flash technique per say when shooting outdoors with a long lens, as the flash will not hit your subject anyway.
Enjoy!!

This one is an example of how I’ve used the Exposure Compensation for the background and used the Flash Zoom and Flash Exposure Compensation for the subject. The background is approximately 2 stops darker than ambient. The benefit of controlling flash this way means the subject to background is much more defined, however I am not too sure if I like this effect though.

Lighting was very dull on the day, with heavy overcast clouds. I deliberately avoid shooting when the subject’s face is completely straight toward me.

One of the negatives of not using flash and when its overcast is the lack of catchlight in the eyes, its more than luck I think.

Always important when covering an event is to link it with what the event is about. In the photo, I waited and framed to include a shampagne, a plate of canepe and an outline of a fasionable lady.

The competition line-up. Got to be quick on that trigger so when the shot comes up you are able to grab it!!
