Rembrandt lighting, a lighting technique that originated from Rembrandt Harmenszoonvan Rijn paintings in the 17th century. It is one of the most pleasant and natural way to light a portrait.

It is in my opinion the easiest way to light.

Most of you are probably already using this lighting technique without realising.

Rembrandt lighting provides the photographer key indicators on how to improve the angle, height, position and power of the key light.

Triangle of Light.

The key in Rembrandt lighting is creating the triangle or diamond shape of light underneath the eye on the shadow side. One side of the face is lit well from the main light source while the other side of the face uses this shadow to create dimensional form on the face.
