The workshop was at the beautiful Springfield Lakes, it was specifically showing you how to balance ambient light with flash.
1.
Using only natural light, this was a good exercise to get out baseline exposure.

A flash was added to the back of the model as rim light, using the ambient light as main.
3.
As sunset approaches, the sun is used as rim light, flash used as main.
